I am shedding tears of joy @ the moment seriously I'm crying. I always wondered why I took to singing and my grandma was amazed at my voice, she sat down with me and began looking through the family photo album and told me my voice and resemblance is that to a family member (Esther Phillips.) She held up an album cover and said Melinda you have the gift of Ms. Esther Phillips. I've never seen her perform until now with this clip. Thanks for posting...this is a true treasure to me.

Esto es antologico en la vida del jazz. Simplemente es sólo para entendidos. Con Mochin Marafioti nos deleitabamos escuchandolas a cada momento y a un seños que casi nadie conocia salvo nosotros ( O.C. Smith)

El comienzo con Esther es precioso. Las segui toda mi vida a las tres. Las amare siempre. Lastima que los jovenes amantes del jazz se las perdieron. Carmen Mc Rae actuo en Buenos Aires en el Teatro Coliseo.

Can this be purchased? Who could ask for anything more!

If I could give this a bazillion thumbs up, I would. One will have to suffice. This made me smile so much!

Being a L.A. native, I have been to the Hollywood Bowl and seen many great performances, but this was a "magical moment in time." Each of these divas was in great voice, and shared the stage with pure grace. Thanks for this historical clip!
The Grand Nina Simone entered and bowed like Cleopatra to these other great great great legends - how damn fabulous was that - pure class all day. What a great magical performance by all.

I had the privilege of attending this great concert that paid homage to Lady Day in 1979 at the Hollywood Bowl. Esther Phillips died five years later of complications from her drug addiction, bless her heart. Maxine Weldon stole the show that evening as I recall with "When the Sun Comes Out". A rare treat to have five legends come together (Esther, Carmen, Maxine and Nina, along with Morgana King, who was left out of the title here). Splendid.
