Papua New Guinea is a country experiencing the effects of climate change and is affecting over 80% of the population because of their dependence on subsistence agriculture.

By working with partners, local communities and women's groups in Papua New Guinea, Bioversity International in partnership National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) is facilitating an opportunity for the farmers of this country from falling deeper into poverty.

Much foundation work has already been completed in this first phase of this Seeds for Needs in Papa New Guinea.

Now almost a year-and-a-half into the project, some significant events for this project has taken place, and milestones are being reached.

At the core of the project, the farmers were given the opportunity to communicate their concerns as well as to understand the role this project will have in their agricultural success in the future.

The project has made use of modern GIS technologies to identify the most promising genebank material to help local women farmers adapt to climate change.

One of the project outcomes is also to prepare a policy brief to help policy makers better understand the value of genetic resources conserved in genebanks and how these resources could be used by women farmers to cope with climate change".
