The Gun Line: I 've been studying elements of poetry that may help people accept Common's use of the word "gun." The elements are "Symbolism" and "Comparison." The gun is just a symbol for power and also a metaphor for his poetry. Note how he refers to his gun as a "black strap." This means urban poetry, which is a "weapon." Also, note the juxtaposition of the "peace sign" and "gun." He acknowledges the threat that his words pose, despite the peaceful intentions. Maybe I helped clarify?
