Eradicate this senseless eradication program. The Light Brown Apple Moth, a.k.a. "LBAM", is rather harmless. Yet, there are several draconian measures in the works to expose our kids and the places they play to toxins in a feeble attempt to annihilate this bug from the face of the earth. As long as it is declared an "emergency", the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) will get it's hundreds of millions in funding from the USDA of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security).
The "solution" is worse than the "problem" here, and the kids are the most vulnerable to side effects, which include nausea, headache, shortness of breathe, asthma, brain damage, cancer, death, and a few other unpleasant things.
Top Ten Reasons to Oppose LBAM Spray
(from About.com: http://kevinkrejci.typepad.com/feelthemath/2008/05/10-reasons-to-o.html )
1. The Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM) is Not an Emergency - No Crop Damage
2. The Light Brown Apple Moth Has Likely Been in California For Years
3. The Light Brown Apple Moth Can Be Safely Managed
4. Aerial Spraying is an Experiment Without Our Consent
5. It's Not Simply a Pheromone - It's a Chemical Mix
6. The Delivery System: A Tiny Plastic Microcapsule That Can Be Inhaled
7. Long-Term Health, Environmental & Wildlife Effects Are Unknown
8. Years of Aerial Spraying May Damage Local Economy
9. Effects on Other Moths, Butterflies and Bees are Unknown
10. Opposition to the Aerial Spraying is Not an Isolated Group of "Activists"
BOTTOM LINE - The LBAM Eradication Program is:
Not necessary
Not effective
Not safe.

ABOUT THIS VIDEO
This video includes shots of the kids and parks and schools and playgrounds and beaches in San Francisco that have been targeted for regular pesticide applications, until every last moth is completely eradicated and none of them show up for at least two mating cycles.
As a father of two boys, I am very concerned that the kids will be most vulnerable, as they climb trees, roll in the mud, and ingest all sorts of things, and their metabolism is much higher than the rest of us.
The tune is "There Ain't No Moths on Me", compliments of one of our kids' favorite bands. Visit their site to learn more and find out when their next gig is:

The Lyrics to "There Ain't No Moths on Me!"
CHORUS
oh there ain't no moths on me
there ain't no moths on me
why you wanna spray the places we play
when there ain't no moths on me?
VERSE 1
once upon a time there was a bug
livin' 'longside the birds and the bees
they called her the light brown apple moth
'cause she liked to nibble fruit trees
well everything was goin' on just fine
there sure was no need to hate her
but then one day the CDFA
decided to eradicate her
VERSE 2
this chemical they wanna spray
it's TOXIC! and it hasn't been tested
there isn't even even proof it'll do the job
the moths might be unaffected
but what's it gonna do to the rest of us
our whole ecosystem's at stake
hey there Sac you're ignorin' the facts
come on! gimme a break!
VERSE 3
over there in new zealand land
there's proof of a sane solution
the moths and the people live in harmony
and there's never been a need to nuke 'em
they've lived down under for a century
and haven't hurt a single soul
we've got the same natural predators here
so what's all the rigamarole
KAZOO CHORUS
(playing We Shall Overcome)
VERSE 4
they're all obsessin' on this little moth
who's not even hurtin' our crops
but the politically motivated behemoth
is who really must be stopped
well I got kids and you got kids
and you know they've got some too
so why in the heck would they pass this dreck
it's all of us they screw
TAG
oh you ain't gonna spray no more no more
you ain't gonna spray no more
no you ain't gonna spray the places we play
no you ain't gonna spray no more
stop the spray!
stop the spray!
stop the spray!
stop the spray!

This video is very creative and well edited. It is worthy of being sent to those in need of being contacted along, such as Congressional Representatives, with a thorough documentary exposing the details of this spray policy. It would create a powerful package.
I am close to finishing such a document.

Thanks! Sure, I would be honored. Credits to Charity and the JAMband for the music and clever lyrics...

They say it has no natural predators. What spider would turn down a tasty apple moth?
antiwarmom 3 years ago
No kidding! If I were a spider, I would love to eat apple moths and their offspring. I have yet to find the proof they have no natural predators. According to the research, birds, spiders, wasps, and earwigs all like to eat these little guys.

This is great! Stopping the spray is SO important, but stopping ANY form of application of these toxic chemicals is also important. So - No Spray, No Twist Ties, No Sticky Traps, No Glop, No Phony Pheromones, and No Pesticides in any way shape or form. It is simply wrong to apply these in urban areas!

Thanks for the comments! I agree, just let nature do her thing. It was just hard to get "don't spray, twist tie, sticky trap, glop, and phony pheromones" to rhyme with "the places we play". Where's the hard evidence this moth is such a terrorist anyway? Why don't we just eradicate all bugs? We have an opportunity in California to lead the world towards healthy organic farming methods, instead of poisoning ourselves with toxic "inert ingredients" that can't be publicly disclosed.
