@WUTaTALENT Maria Callas was lived her last years in paris after her 1973-4 farewell tour!Her last recording took place privately at her home in paris on 12 august 1977 and she died on 16 September 1977 at the age of 53!Her First Perfomance was as Santuza in 1938 in Athens at the Age of 15!

Fascinating in that there is really nothing wrong with her voice. I think Gobbi was right when he said Callas lost confidence.

@WUTaTALENT She made her US debut in 1954 in Chicago after already having become a major star in Italy, and her last operatic performance in USA was Tosca at the MET in 1965, just few weeks before her last Tosca in London.

After 7 years of retirement she went for a couple of years in a world (also US) tour recitals of arias and duets with tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, who was at that time also her lover, after she had been left by Aristotele Onassis who had married Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968. She last sang in public in Japan in 1975.
