I'm a big fan of his early films. Sign of the Pagan was his best..IMO

He was in a Second World War US bomber crew and sustained facial injuries in a crash leading to the reconstructive surgery that gave him his distinctive features.
A hero right down to his bootlaces. Diamond geezer and no mistake.
