This is a detailed Taekwondo Kickboxing tutorial for the "Back Kick" (aka Spinning Back Kick). This is a powerful, long-range kicking technique, effective in Kickboxing, MMA & Olympic style sparring.

See me using the back kick in my first professional fight:

FAQs:
Q: Where can I buy one of those kicking dummies?
A: You can buy a Body Opponent Bag (B.O.B.) by going here:
http://www.centurymartialarts.com/Training_Bags/Body_Opponent_Bag.aspx?pmc=Af...

Q: What is in the base of the B.O.B./Bag?
A: It is filled with around 270lbs of all-purpose sand.

Q: What stretches are best for this kick?
A: This kick requires moderate front splits flexibility. You do not have to have a full front split to execute this kick effectively, but the more front split flexibility you have, the easier it is to perform this kick.

Q: What part of the foot do you hit with?
A: You strike with the bottom or outer knife edge of the heel. Your toes will often angle out off to the side of your target and may hit during or immediately after your heel makes contact. After you have delivered the bulk of the force with the heel, you can use the rest of your foot to push off of your target to help recoil your leg back into place. Just remember to make sure you aim with the heel and deliver the bulk of the force with the heel, not the with the ball or toes. Do NOT be in a rush to re-chamber your leg before you have delivered the full amount of force of the kick.

Tip:
Once you are used to the basic movements, you can start adding a slight skip with your supporting foot before the kick. This will allow you to load all of your body weight onto the kick combining it with your forward momentum, delivering an even more devastating strike.

Q: Why am I wearing kickboxing shorts and not a dobok?
A: Multiple reasons. Because I train specifically for kickboxing style competition (I retired from Olympic sparring in 06'), and because it's easier to see the position of my legs in shorts, as opposed to a baggy dobok.

  • can you jump into the kick to give it more force ?

  • @Deface94 Yes. And also I forgot to mention something in the video. Throwing a back kick from a neutral stance is different from throwing one from a side or back stance. Just before step 1 (the cross step), you need to pivot your rear heel forward. This will line your kicking heel up properly for when you throw the kick. If you were kicking instead from a back or side stance, the rear heel would already be in proper position (or near it) for the back kick, so pivoting the heel isn't needed.
