A California beach comes alive at night. Beach-hoppers (Megalorchestia spp.) are small crustaceans that emerge from their burrows in the sand near the high tide line in the evening in search of fresh stranded kelp to eat. A healthy population of amphipods like this can eat much of the kelp that lands on the beach. Their escape hopping behavior is easy to observe when they are disturbed. These animals have highly developed orientation behaviors but the hop response to a small disturbance results in what appears to be random body position and direction (see slow motion).
