@lnromandude As far as power goes...I think with a well designed intake and restrictor (especially the restrictor) you can probably get 60-70 horsepower NA out of a bike engine, but only because you're spinning it to the moon. The torque is going to be low because you just can't generate any cylinder pressure sucking through a restrictor without the help of a turbo. I wouldn't recommend a turbo for a first year car as implementation is a lot of work. We made something like 35 hp NA last year

@lnromandude I'm not sure I would question the reliability of a single cylinder engine. After all, it should have roughly 1/4 of the moving parts of a 4 cylinder, right? Packaging the single is WAY easier. The teams that are really successful with the 4 cylinders tend to use them as a stressed frame member which is cool and lowers the weight, but it gets you back to that reliability thing. You're putting forces on the engine case it wasn't designed for.

yeah i agree. we're actually look into single-cylinder engines, some from KTM. a lot of people on my team are questioning the reliability of the single-cylinders. not sure what to think about that, but as far as power goes, i'm sure we could get the same amount of power as we would with a 600cc bike engine because the restrictor plate would lower the power to about 60-70 hp. also we're not turbocharging anything. not enough time and money...it's our first year doing this.

@lnromandude You're going to find that the intake restriction is going to hurt...a lot. We had a team a few years ago that used an F4i motor. After turbocharging and doing A LOT of engine development they managed to get back to nearly stock power levels with the 19mm restrictor. I really don't know that there's much need for much more than 75 horsepower in these cars.

Nothing wrong with being new at something, it just means you come away learning and improving. Last year we ran this engine N/A, and it was a dismal failure power-wise, so build and improve. Pretty sure we're on track to develop this engine more next year too.

@tsab2007 based on your website you are using a Honda F4i. If I'm not mistaken aren't those fuel injected from the factory, furthermore, making 109hp and 46ft-lb stock? So 85hp would be a -22.018% decrease.
Additionally, is your team racing in California again? Your best acceleration score last year, which took 2nd place in the event and 3rd overall, would barely make it in the top 10 at Michigan. To me Michigan just seems more competitive. But hey, that's my opinion.
I feel bad for poor what's his name -he's probably up all night losing sleep over the comments on his video when he should be losing sleep with Elise. tsab2007 isn't from UW...think about it.
