I've noticed that my bale of longleaf pine needles is made of bunches folded over like you did. The needles at the end of the bale are quite mutilated, but throughout the center, then are much straighter. I straighten them for coiling baskets. This was very interesting to see how you baled them! Are they also done by large machines that drive down the rows between the trees?
You do realise this would be a WHOLE lot easier if you just used a standard PTO driven square baler built for hay/straw? You can easily modify them to make smaller bales...
