If you go down to the Bellarine Peninsula today, you might just find chef Aaron Turner and wife Astrid foraging for clover, wild rocket or mushrooms (not the mind-altering ones) to serve up at Loam their recently launched restaurant at the Lighthouse Olive Grove. Hidden on the gravel back-roads of Drysdale, it overlooks countless rows of kalamata, leccino and frantoio. As well as natures harvest, this locavore themed eatery also draws on its own kitchen garden and locally made product like Zeally Bay sourdough. But theres no point gathering farm fresh goodies only to bury them under heavy seasonings and Turner certainly doesnt, preferring slow, low-temperature cooking to constant use of the sauté pan. The menu is basically a list of ingredients with meal options spanning 2-course express lunches and 7-dish degustation dinners. From slow-poached egg yolk with turnip flowers to parsnip ice-cream, theres no telling what form the produce might take. Loam is a food detour worth taking.
This was without doubt one of the worst dining experiances of my life. I waited 4 hours for 2 courses. When we spoke to the owner he had a very quick and aggressive response for me, they obviously get a lot of complaints. The meals were small and the owner said the record is 16 courses for one person and I bet they were still hungry afterwards. I went last year and it was great but this year I would have prefered airport food.
Bottom line LOAM IS LAME. DONT BOTHER EATING HERE
