BIOTECH has succeeded in tackling the problem of the dumping of food waste in the streets of Kerala through the installation of biogas plants that use the food waste to produce gas for cooking and, in some cases, electricity for lighting; the residue serves as a fertiliser. To date BIOTECH has built and installed an impressive 12,000 domestic plants (160 of which also use human waste from latrines to avoid contamination of ground water), 220 institutional plants and 17 municipal plants that use waste from markets to power generators. The disposal of food waste and the production of clean energy are not the only benefits of BIOTECH's scheme. The plants also replace the equivalent of about 3.7 tonnes/day of LPG and diesel which in turn results in the saving of about 3,700 tonnes/year of CO2, with further savings from the reduction in methane production as a result of the uncontrolled decomposition of waste, and from the transport of LPG.

  • n one thing more...can u tell me how much time we shud keep waste in to digester....before putting it to tank

    thanx

  • @ssaahhiill2687 The time varies for different digesters and the type of feed, it could range from a day to a week or two for different designs. However, it's important to remember the plant operates continuously, not in a batch process. So you put feed in continuously, and it overflows continuously. To keep it in the plant for the right length of time, you just need the plant size to be suitable for the rate at which you will be adding feed.

  • @ssaahhiill2687 how the cost

  • @anjanam1987 There's details on cost on the Ashden Awards website

  • i dint understand that why biogas doesnot leak from the outlet,,,(from where we can gat fertilizer)..plz tell me...i think that if gas wud leak n blast will happen:)

plz tell me ...plz see 1:53.....why dont gas leak from there?

  • @ssaahhiill2687 The feed pipe connects to the bottom of the outer drum, which only has slurry in it. The gas is contained in the inner drum, and rises to the top where it is trapped. So, no leaks.

  • Very cool. I really hope this takes off world wide. It seems like a simple process and it releases no major smell, which is probably the home owners main concern. Good Luck.

  • impressive, is really impressive me!

  • AWESOME

  • @stevendgomez - This solution is on point, and it's right on time.

  • @nthglasScotland - True genius at work.

  • @harrislcy - Had I been a home owner, I would love to install a solution like this in my home, so that I could have the joyful experience of producing my OWN source of energy. I also like the concept of developing a relationship with local restaurants, so that I can help to collect food waste to use with the Biogas system.

  • @PukkPukk - I agree with you on this note. It's such a blessing to see SOLUTIONS in place. The simplicity is part of why this technology is so amazing.

  • @ssaahhiill2687 the gas is lighter than slurry and most of the gases in the container, so it rises to the top of the containing chamber and is released under pressure when the valve is opened

  • The point one should understand is, these solutions are more for saving the conventional energy like the lpg, or thermal power etc. Cost can be recovered over long period, but it also takes care of power cut problem. Also this sort of solutions help in waste disposal. The govt gives subsidy for this sort of arrangements .
