Yes that's right, you can indeed use silicon dioxide instead of iron oxide to make thermite. The sulfur reacts with the aluminum first in order to get enough heat to begin the SiO2 and Al reaction.

Ratio is 9:10:12
silicon dioxide:aluminum powder:sulfur.

Don't pour water on it though as you'll make hydrogen sulfide gas, it smells terrible and is toxic.

Check out my other vids! I have thermite and fireworks! Some thermite made using copper oxide and even sand!

  • where is the cheapest place to buy aluminum powder in bulk?

  • @7digitalSunday Definitely ebay. That's where I have purchased all of mine.

  • Is that molten silicon?

  • @BerkinGG It should be molten silicon, I don't think any of the other products would melt at the temperatures in the reaction.

  • Nice video. You say eBay is the cheapest, do you have a certain supplier? Because aluminum powder is surprisingly one of the hardest chemicals to come across in bulk on eBay. Not TOO bulk, I just need a reasonable 2lbs listing. Thanks.

  • @11vvdd nice, thanks, never would have thought ebuy

  • @nitrogeb Too true, I failed as a chemist there, haha.

  • @11vvdd Ok, thanks.

  • @yellowmetalcyborg I used mass ratios.

  • Is the ratio in the description a molar ratio or a mass ratio?

  • @nitrogeb you fail, its a metalloid
