Nina Pillai's arty evening in Delhi

Though Onam is today, art curator Nina Pillai decided to celebrate the festival much in advance with an art exhibition that showcased the work of artist Aslam Shaikh.

His paintings depicted the masks of gods that are used in Pulikali, a colourful recreational folk art from the state of Kerala and Kudiyattam, one of Kerala's earliest theatrical arts. Next was a performance by a group of Kathakali dancers which was the highlight of the evening. The dancers charmed the audience with their dramatic make-up, extravagant and elaborate costumes and exaggerated eye and hand movements.

Onam celebration: Nina was accompanied by her sons, Krishna and Shiv. Shiv, who sounded excited about his Onam plans, said, "Every year, we have a lot of relatives and close friends coming home on Onam. My granny is a great cook and she will cook some authentic Mallu food for the occasion, as always. The food will be served on banana leaves and everyone will be dressed traditionally."

Royal heirs: Making a rare appearance at the event were the young royal heirs. We spotted Tikka Shatrujit Singh with son Suryajit Singh, chit-chatting with Ajatshatru Singh and Ritu Singh's daughter Adishree and son Raghuvir. Suryajit, who is on a short vacation to India, will soon be going back to his university abroad. He said, "I was here in India for a very short trip. Last month, me and my dad were in South Africa to watch the FIFA World Cup. It was a magical experince for both of us." Ritu Singh also told us a little about her kids. "Both my kids are
studying abroad; they are hardly ever here in India. In fact, my daughter will be leaving for
Singapore next week and so will be my son. It was great to have them home. We all enjoyed and had a good time together this summer," said Ritu.
