Machida Ward, Tokyo WadoRyu Renmei Team Kata.
Video shot at JKF 38th Tokyo Karate Athlete Championships 2008.
Location: Tokyo Budokan
Members: Honga-san, Takaaki Yokoyama, Mori-san.
They finished 2nd place out of 10 Teams, using only Wado kata, so a good result.
See their Chinto Team Kata on KenzenJapan.
Very very good.

Competition karate is always glamed up for the show. Real Wado self defence techniques are very effective. We are lucky to have Shindo Yoshinryu Ju Jitsu woven into our style and use taisabaki and nagashi very effectivley.

That is, what I call "creative bunkai", it has nothing to do with one of the main goals of Karate: effective selfdefense. But maybe this kind of bunkai is typical for Wado-ryu, this I don`t know. Performance itself is very good.

Thank for thi upload.
Kaisetsu esplain wadoryu concept from the bunkai sequences.
Bunkai is the take down of kata.
They are two tools for the karate practice.

Kaisetsu/bunkai arguments apart, very nice. I especially like the throw from Kihon Kumite 10 being used at 2.20

Competition-kata has "bunkai", no kaisetsu. :)
Personally I dislike calling cheap bunkai "kaisetsu", because imho it means understanding the katas meaning in Wado-context, not explaining it in funny ways by using imagination. A big thumbs-up for the team for using Wado-like techniques!
