My old earthquake simulator recently got broke due to a software upgrade. So, I'm building a newer/better one! This was just a quick test to see how it looks on youtube and to see if my video capture could keep up. It can draw about twice as fast as this video shows, but FRAPS craps out!

Please keep in mind that I have only spent about 2 days building this so far, and there is still a LOT left I want to do/fix. :D

This animation consists of EVERY earthquake in the ANSS database from 1/1/1970 to 3/9/2011. There are over 2.4 million earthquakes in this time range!!!

The small white dots are quakes from magnitude 1.0 to 4.9. The larger white rings are quakes 5.0 and above...

The database is hosted on the NCEDC website. For more info on the data, visit http://www.ncedc.org .

  • So your simulator was ruined by a software "upgrade." They tend to do that don't they?

  • @dragonridley When it is Microsoft software - yes. ;-)

  • I love how it goes angry at 1993! lol

new earthquake in Japan, poor people :(

  • @terrorista31 That was me that made it angry btw. I was playing with the speed. ;-) Also, yes, poor people! I'll be adding an animation for that one once I sort out a few things with this new app..

  • The time scale slows down alot between 0:42-0:59, making it appear that 1991-95 had very few earthquakes in California. In this video, on what is the time scale based?

  • @squimball oh thank you for the reply :)
