  • I got the Wilderness Survival merit badge in Scouts. I was really amazed the first time I started a fire with firesteel. I did it twice: first with cotton and other tinder, and second with steel wool and other tinder. That same day, I also started a fire using steel wool and a 9V battery. Matches are nice, but a firesteel will enable you to continue to start fires long after the matches are gone. Cheers!!

  • @40MetersCW Man, I haven't watched this video in a long time! Firesteels are definitely very useful pieces of kit but like anything, they take practice. I remember the wilderness survival scouting days....ahhh memories!

  • Do you use a piece of hacksaw blade for a striker or just the striker that came with the firesteel?

  • In this video I'm using a saw blade but now I use the back of my knife. I keep the strikers that come with the firesteel close just in case though. The reason i was using a saw blade here is because i was trying to light wood shavings only which require a bit more spark..the saw blade throws a much bigger shower of sparks from the ferro rod than the knife spine but wears it down in half the time..

  • Well done. Did you have to scrape some magnesium off to get that going or does it work just to get the hot sparks?

  • Hot sparks only..but you have to shave the wood pretty thin for it to catch..its much easier using super dry tinder like cedar bark, birch, or cotton..Ive never used magnesium and don't really plan to..thanks for the kind words!!

  • i am in scouts and i think that firesteel looks cool

p.s. does bear grylls use that kind of flint

  • hmm i think its not so dry

  • I agree, I use to use a swiss firesteel It originally came with a unsharpened hacksaw blade which almost destroyed the rod, so I replaced it with a small file which takes alot less force to strike. But the best one I've found so far after trying many, is the strike force!

  • I loves fire me
