This is the coolest looking knife I've seen. Too bad it weighs so much and can't even chop. Unless you're a pilot, steer clear of the Gerber LMF II.

This Gerber LMF II was designed for pilot egress and survival. The serrated blade and pommel are restricted to specific tasks such as egress through cockpit glass, aluminum aircraft skin, and cutting webbing and seat belts.

Unfortunately those two features-the serrations and the butt cap smasher-get in the way of bushcraft related tasks. The pommel, which is awesome indeed, added so much to the overall weight of the knife that it was far too great a weight penalty to even consider adding it to a bug out bag. Otherwise, the found the design exciting and versatile.

First, the sheath is "jump ready". It was a little too tight for my liking. It was like arm wrestling a bear every time I wanted to unsheath it, though it could have been user error. It was a solid sheath though, and offers great variety of molle attachment options. The real gem here is the built in sharpener. What a brilliant idea. No hollow handle nonsene, just solid engineering. As long as you have a sheath, you have a sharp knife.

Are you reading this knife makers? Put sharpeners in sheaths, and modify those drain holes into whistles. Better still, make sheaths that are capable of adding various tools like a sharpener, fire striker, file, screwdriver, seatbelt cutter, pouches. What an upsell! Maybe I'll start making some myself.

Anyway, the weight penalty is far too great, especially when the knife has ZERO chopping capabilities. That, and the serrated blade is less than ideal for bushcraft. So, survivalists steer clear of this knife. Pilots though...

  • At it again here with you qualified review? And ahhh.. yes the serrations... Again, I ask have you ever used one of these knives you review? I mean in the field, not your enviro camp or back yard?

Have you ever tried to cut a rope, piece of PVC pipe, cord, wire, ice, anything at all, with cold, wet, sore, numb hands? Along with the standard Buck 119, I have also carried a gerber with serrations with me for 20 years, and I tell you out in the field, for survival or anything, they sure are nice.

  • Why is the SRK lighter? BECAUSE IT HAS A THINNER BLADE.
