Uh....A lack of regulation? Or easy credit (increase in the money supply) and low interest rates set by the Federal reserve back.

@cclodfe Yeah I think there are a lot of variables that went into it. While there was definitely a lack of market discipline (easy credit) I most certainly think that deficient regulation of the financial system (like CDS) was a huge factor.
