Yer not lyin'. Don plays all sorts of outer limits open tunings, and a lot of the strings are dropped down a step or two from standard. The fanned frets are optimum for this kind of guitar work. Each string has a progressively longer scale length, towards the bass end. This allows more optimum string tension and better intonation on those lower-tuned strings. This idea was originated by Ralph Novak, a brilliant and innovative luthier. Still considered radical, but total genius. Him and Don both.

I hear that once you try a guitar with fanned frets you'll wonder why all guitars arent made like that.
