http://www.karenrothnutrition.com Holistic Nutrition Consultant, Karen Roth, MS, NC discusses safe alternative to insecticides for controlling ants.

Today Im going to talk about something not totally related to food expect on how we can use certain foods to control an ant problem. With summer on its way, and hot weather driving ants inside, many of you have commented to me that you are so frustrated with all the ants. And that you have to use an exterminator regularly, and even spray inside your home.

But what I wanted to share today was an alternative to ridding your home of ants with out the use of harmful insect repellents. Because using these harmful pesticides especially indoors creates invisible air pollution. And with us having our windows shut and air conditioning on, those chemicals linger in the air for a long time. Plus if you are spraying directly on say your kitchen counter, there is going to be spill off or misting off onto other areas that you may later lay your food on, or say it trickles down to the floor and then your pet comes along and eats something off the floor. Pesticides may contribute to infertility, birth defect, learning disorder and cancer.

So I dont want to scare you, but I want you to know that you have alternatives for eliminating those irritating ants.

If you notice that your ants are coming in from a specific area like the kitchen window, sprinkle some powdered cinnamon. This creates a barrier that they wont cross. Now if you come home and you have a parade of them marching down your hallway, you can kill them without spraying harmful insect repellents.

Something I like is Orange Guard; a water based indoor/outdoor insecticide that can be used around food, humans and pets. Made from d-Limonene (orange peel extract) Orange peel is a natural repellent. When applied directly, the insect suffocates.

Orange Guard is 100% biodegradable and water-soluble. You may spray pet bedding to control fleas. Go to their website www.orangeguard.com and click on Where to Buy and search by your zip code.

  • have you heard that silicone spray wich is arsoft gun lubricant kills them instantly can you tell me if its harmfull to humans or pets ?

  • @21hdflat I don't know the answer to that sorry!

  • I heard baby powder also works. The ants would dry up. If they go back to their nest, they would spread the baby powder to other ants. It's very absorbent and ants need moisture to live. So you can spread to other places in your house, but preferably not near any foods.

  • @MrBrightSide622 Very cool!

  • Great tip. After seeing it. I remembered that have a cat repellent that is citrus based. I tried it on the ants. It killed them quickly. Best of all the bottle says it won't harm our house cat.

  • @wompuscat1 Cool! Thanks for the post.

  • :( but the poor ants just wanna be starship rangers!!!

  • The queen is the source of problem.Hate them -:(

  • all you need to do is mix 1 or 2 tablespoons of borax (found in the laundry soap aisle of the grocery store) with about a quarter cup of honey or pancake syrup. Molasses or Kayro would work also. Table sugar works too, as does peanut butter. Anyway, mix it well, then place nickle-sized portions on cardboard or foil. Put them out where you are seeing the ants. Within about 48 hours your ant problems will stop. The ants take it back home, and it does kill the queen.

  • Do a search for Borax ant killer mix. This video here is o.k. for temporary problems but it won't kill the Queen or other ants in the nest. You need to use BAIT.

  • build a ant box fill with sugar and water place in yard ants leave house then poison house if they come back we do it every year

  • spray don't work she does not know what she's talking about when you spray the ant colony breaks up and you get more ants use Terro

  • Damn I should have watched this earlier and gotten orange guard bcuz I have already sprayed my room with raid and I'm in the living room waiting for it to sterilize

  • @21hdflat The answer to your question is probably in the warning section on the label of your product. If you can't find it, there is probably a phone number to call on the label as well.
