I can explain basically the black figure or as you would call it a monolith was created by an alien species far from our galaxy that was here millions of years before us they managed to become non corpreal beings but anyway they use monoliths to study the universe and promote intelligent beings like early humans to evolve and then it fast forwards 3 or 4 million years in time to the present or what arthur Clarke imagined it to be and because of the monolith we evolved

I think it went beyond that. It was man learning to use a tool. He used the first tool (an improvised bone as a club) not just to kill, but to gain access to an invaluable resource: water and food. And from there... all the way right into outerspace with space capsules, stations and whatnot!
