In Georgia there is a new law which allows for anyone to keep livestock on their own property without regulation. I researched this, and it turns out no express wording of the law limits animals by size, type or number. He could keep a GIRAFFE back there and no one could do a darn thing about it.

This is Hank's chicken hutch. You might have noticed the fence in the foreground. That is for plants to attach themselves- I was standing in one of the garden plots. Hank has two victory gardens with several crops planted. Corn, tomatoes, okra, pole beans, peppers, you name it. Hank makes sure his chickens are on the roost every night to keep the hutch tidy. To clean it, you merely rake under the roost, collect the droppings with a shovel and bucket, then dump it in the gardens. Instant fertilizer. Even the waste product of this setup is valuable. Hank is currently getting around 9 eggs a day off that setup, and plans on filling it with about 10 more birds. He told me most of the eggs are large and have a very orange yolk due to the high quality feed he uses. He also throws them chickweed, meadow garlic and suet to enhance fat content and flavor.

My operation will probably be guinea fowl or golden (Chinese) pheasants on a smaller scale, and I will breed them for meat. I may buy a peacock couple to protect them from snakes outside the chicken tractor I plan on building. (Remember, I live on a stream full of frogs and snakes)

And that's the wealth around us.

  • I'm looking to raise chickens for mostly their eggs.......what type of chicken would you recomend I would also like an easier type to take care of? Would just like to hear your opinion......thanks

  • @pelletgun1993 brown leghorns and rhode island reds are great egg layers that eat nearly half the feed but still make good meat birds. If you like very rich, blue eggs try french morans.

  • @LeonRFpoa Appreciate it.

  • My brother in law in Alvin,Tx has a very similar coop. Those brown eggs are the best & yeah they are like pets to him. He would never eat one. Last time we were there we heard him scream like a girl when he almost grabbed a 6ft rat snake that was in the nest. Good thing I was there- WHACK'EM & STACK'EM!

  • About 20 miles down river from me is an urban homstead with free range chickens. The rooster can often be seen in the parking lot of the local Mcdonalds eaning him the nick name of "Mr. McNuggets".

  • @LeonRFpoa people in chili keep the suckers in there kitchens, they make an area for em, and little houses, when they need one bam dinner time. on the net look around Texas A&M sent 4lb males down there to improve thier herd a few years back, crazy cool animal is 98% useful kinda like a mouse to a cat only for a human

  • @THEHOGZONE I hadn't thought about that, yes they do propagate quickly. I was thinking of maybe starting a muntjac deer operation if I can get out of this house. Supposedly Muntjac are easily kept, feed themselves, can defend themselves from predators with their fangs and can easily be housebroken, they use litter boxes and have a baby once every 8 months. They make great pets and their meat is an exotic venison. Free range organic muntjac meat would be like 35 bucks a pound I'll bet.
