My daughter is a fiddle player and thanks to her uncle, she now possesses a beautiful -- looking and sounding -- fiddle made by James "Winky" Hicks of Grove Hill, Ala. Receiving the instrument was a surprise for my daughter -- as was getting to meet Winky. Whenever bluegrass players get together, they do one thing -- jam. Within a few moments of learning she would be the caretaker of this wonderful violin, my daughter was playing some standards as Winky accompanied her on his mid-1930s Gibson banjo.
Winky is better known for his wonderful mandolins (he's also famous for his turkey calls) This is the second violin he's made and it is wonderfully crafted and has an extremely rich tone.
that right thur is some good pickin

I know Mr Hicks has made banjos and mandolins but I know Mr Hicks for his great turkey calls. I have a Sweet Raspy Turkey Call made by Winky Hicks. I got it about ten years ago. I actually bought two and gave one away to a freind. I would love to have another one if you know how to get in touch with him.

The violin does have a rich tone and the lady plays it well. I shoot a lot of players and instruments. Enjoy your videos and learning about Winky Hicks.
