21st May 2011 Another Spectacle of Migrating Birds over the Maltese Islands
Following the manifestation of migrating raptors that was witnessed over the Maltese Islands during the last few days of April, since last Wednesday early afternoon another unprecedented spectacle of migrating birds, this time white storks, has been observed.
The first two flocks that arrived on Wednesday numbered close to 600 birds, which eventually broke up into smaller flocks, most of which spent Wednesday and Thursday nights in various places mostly on Malta, while a good number of others continued with their northern journey. Friday morning saw a sizeable flock, close to 100 birds, cross over to Gozo where they spent most of the day and that night. By this morning the major part of the birds had left the islands.
The Maltese Islands are not on any main migratory route of any particular passage-bird species, definitely not on that of the white stork. White storks in ornithological terms are therefore referred to as of rare occurrence with stragglers, on occasions in small parties, since storks prefer to migrate in numbers rather than singly, observed on the islands during the migration periods at sporadic intervals.
