Recorded: Unknown Venue, Kansas City, Kansas Probably May 1940

Personnel:
Charlie Parker - Alto Sax

This is probably the earliest known recording of Parker, and the only example of extended unaccompanied playing. The recordings were made by Clarence Davis, probably in May 1940.
The tunes were spliced together. Both were incomplete.
Early sources gave 1937 as the recording date, but this seems unlikely given the quality of Parker's playing. Also, he quotes a snippet of a Roy Eldridge solo from a 1938 Chu Berry recording of "Body and Soul."

  • I'm truly amazed!

  • @NfiniteXdestinY Honeysuckle Rose melody is a delayed resolution pattern that is embedded in virtually every bebop solo.

  • wonderful to hear early bird thanks

  • Legendary !!

    amazing !

  • @KaRidder234 This is not a mature bird style yet. This is more melody based than his mature style.

  • At that time he was already a Bop player; it's amazing!

  • It's weird to think that at age 20, he's more than half way through his life and just starting his career.

  • @wahunter ∽∽ ... or rather ear opening?;) I love that little clip since it's the perfect demonstration for what Bird could do in each and every situation: He could swing without any rhythm accompaniment, and so he could keep the form, even if the rhythm section would occasionally turn the beat around. ∽∽ His improvisational conception was merely based on melody & rhythm than on chord structures.

  • Charlie Parker

Bird's Eyes last unissued vol. 1/4

  • Yo...he just ripped that Honeysuckle Rose something serious..Funny thing is I was practicing a few weeks back and decided to modulate the "Every honeybee.." and I thought i was so hip...lol Bird beat me to it once again
