Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy talk about TIONG BAHRU, the latest in the acclaimed CIVIC LIFE films.
Shot on location in the art deco heritage estate of Tiong Bahru in Singapore in June 2010, the film features a cast of 150 volunteers drawn from Tiong Bahru and from across Singapore.
The result of an 18 month process of discussions and community consultations, and shot in 35mm widescreen, TIONG BAHRU features stunning vistas of the Singapore skyline and remarkable portraits of the residents of the estate, and the hawkers, traders and visitors to Tiong Bahru's famous wet market and hawker centre.
The film is a collaboration between the National Museum of Singapore and the British Council, with support from the Singapore International Foundation. Additional logistical support was provided by the National Environment Agency of Singapore.
TIONG BAHRU premiered at the National Museum of Singapore in October 2010 and previewed in the UK at the Encounters Short Film Festival in Bristol in November 2010. For more information on the project, go to: http://www.desperateoptimists.com/
