Chapter 5
"I. Am. So. PROUD OF YOU, JOE!" Kevin messed Joes hair.
"I know, I know. Sheesh," Joe looked in the mirror nervously, "It took twenty minutes to fix my hair."
"Relax, Joe," Nick said, "You look great... What time is your date?"
"Seven. Why?"
"It's already six-forty."
"WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS?" Joe sprang out of the bathroom and tripped over his shoes. He was wearing a light blue long-sleeved, button-up shirt, and blue jeans. He grabbed his black jacket before running out the door of his apartment.
Kevin sniffed, "Our little Joe's becoming a man... Aw, hold me, Nick!" Kevin embraced him.
"There, there," Nick patted the Kevin's back.

Demi was looking down at her watch, "Three... Two... One..." Joe ran into the aisle. He stopped in front of her, panting. "Well," she put a hand on her waist, "Just in time. I almost thought you gave up."
"No way," he looked up at her and took a deep breath. He stared at his date for a while.
Demi had her hair tied into a ponytail. She was wearing a white T-shirt, gray pants, and black rubber shoes. A black jacket was wrapped around her waist. Joe looked down at what he was wearing.
"Let me just say that you look like you're going to mass," she smirked.
"You know, I'm starting to wonder," Joe stood upright, "Why I decided to continue pursuing a girl who's so quick to criticize."
"Well, you're not the only one," Demi said.
Joe tried to play it smooth, "I guess I'm just a sucker for pretty girls."
"Alright, Mr. Casa Nova, what's on the agenda tonight?"
"I'm thinking dinner, and then we'll just walk around and... talk."
"Couldn't we just talk over dinner?" she pointed out.
"I'm definitely a sucker for pretty girls..." he mumbled, walking past her.

It happened that no one spoke a single word over dinner. They were passing by many shops.
"Can I ask you a question?" Joe asked.
"You just did," Demi replied, not looking at him.
"You're not making this very easy for me, are you?"
"Not one bit."
"Why were you buying that Dr. Seuss book? I mean, you're not exactly a five-year-old anymore..."
"Yeah," she looked at him sarcastically, "I'm actually seven."
"Seven-TEEN is more like it," Joe emphasized the 'teen.'
"Hm, I guess you're smarter than you look," Demi mused. "My younger brother's birthday's tomorrow. And he loves Dr. Seuss."
"I guess you're not as aloof as you WANT people to think," Joe spotted.
"I guess that really depends..." she said, distracted. She was glaring at the TV set beside her.
"What's up?" they both stopped. Joe looked at the TV. Robert Pattinson was on the screen, in the middle of an interview. "So, you like Robert Pattinson?"
"I hate him," she turned and started walking again.
"Wait up," Joe ran a bit to catch up. "You know, you're the first girl I've ever met who said she doesn't like Robert Pattinson."
"Am I also the first girl to say I didn't like you very much?" she asked.
"Very much?" Joe twisted her words, "So that means you DO like me."
She countered, "So you ARE obnoxious and stuck-up like the rest of them."
"You always say 'the rest of them.' Who exactly are you talking about?"
"That's for me to know, and for you NOT to."
An awkward silence filled the air -awkward because the air around Demi was hostile, while the air around Joe was a mixture of confusion and, well... more confusion. He needed to find the right timing...
Just then, Demi stopped. She was looking into the glass window of a novelty store -a shop full of gimmicks and magic stuff. Joe stopped as well,
"Do you want to go inside?"
"No."
He raised his eyebrow, "Demi, I think both you and I know that you want to go in there. So, come on."
