In a world of fast food and multi-tasking during meals, try mindful eating to break this busy cycle and achieve some inner peace.

To complete this How-To you will need:

An orange
A non-judgmental attitude

Step 1: Remove distractions

Remove distractions. Turn off the TV or computer and put away reading materials or paperwork.

Tip: If practicing mindful eating with others, enhance the experience by sitting together in silence.

Step 2: Sit

Sit in a comfortable position.

Step 3: Examine the orange

Examine the orange you are about to eat. Notice how it feels in your hand. Study the curves and notches on its skin.

Tip: These steps can be applied to any meal by attentively considering each bite of food.

Step 4: Consider the orange

Consider how the orange connects you to the world around you -- the place it was grown, the person who picked it, the sun and water that helped it grow.

Step 5: Peel the orange

Peel the orange slowly, paying attention to the sound the peel makes as you tear it and to the smell of citrus released.

Step 6: Taste the orange

Place a piece of orange in your mouth and chew it deliberately. Notice the flavor that bursts forth as you bite down.

Step 7: Pay attention to how you feel

Pay attention to your feelings as you eat the orange. Happy, sad, tired, or otherwise -- don't judge these emotions as good or bad, just as what exist at the moment.

Step 8: Repeat these steps

Continue to give the full attention of your mind and your senses to each piece of orange you eat.

  • What if the orange squirts you in the eye? Maybe show no anger but be passively aware of emotions and the absurdity of it all.

  • @Iadygagaofficial The thing is...You don't waste 2 hours or more time than you are expected to eat the orange...You just focus on the orange in the present moment, you focus on what you're doing, focus on you...You're not focusing on what you have to do after eating the orange wich may cause you anxiety...You just take the time that you need to eat the orange to be aware of the present moment...That really has an effect on your nervous system, on dealing with stress and anxiety.

  • I'm surprised there are so many people ignoring or moking this video's teachings. Mindful eating can really better your health.

Maybe due to the fact that everyone here speaks English, I get the feeling the majority of people here is American. Anyway, even if everyone is not from the US, don't forget our whole western world is plagued with over eating, sad, depressed, poorly educated (when it comes down to the body) obese/fat/unhealthy people. Learn instead of pointlessly agitating your tongues.

  • Why is this important at all

  • @MikeCK1969 Thanks a milion. I need to practice eating slower.

  • @JSantana319 Mindful eating can make your digestion a lot better and can make your overall health better. You don't need to feel the orange, just eat slowly without distraction and chew well.

  • "How to molest you food"

  • I bought a big Mac, felt it, listened to that biting sound, envisioned the connection to world...long story shot, felt so good and made me to buy one more. So, this was a disaster for me as it made me to eat 2 big Macs a day..........

  • This is such bullcrap. Just peel it and eat.
