Drumlanrig Castle, ancient Douglas stronghold and Dumfriesshire home of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, was completed in 1691. It is surrounded by the 120,000 acre Queensberry Estate, Country Park and Victorian Gardens. Drumlanrig was built by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry and is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Scotland. Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece The Madonna and the Yarnwinder, worth around £30 million, was stolen from Drumlanrig in 2003. James Douglas, 2nd Duke of Queensberry was very influential in bringing about the Treaty of Union in 1707. The same evening the 2nd Duke was signing the Act of Union, his son, the Earl of Drumlanrig, is said to have roasted a servant boy on a spit in an oven in the kitchens of his house in Edinburgh.

  • my gran also worked at the castle and stayed at high farding bank as did my great grandparents by the name of murphy and bone

  • According to a comment at The flight of Rudolf Hess - The Education Forum: "Buccleuch was one of the leading figures of the pro-Nazi group in the UK. We now know that he was a member of the secret Right Club that was responsible for supplying secret information to Nazi Germany during the war."

  • A large part of the establishment in the UK and USA was either 1. anxious to avoid getting involved in another world war 0R 2. sympathetic to fascism. It is possible to make a case that Britain should have stayed out of the war and let Hitler eventually take on Stalin in a fight for Eastern Europe.

  • "There is ... firm evidence that the Duke of Kent and the Duke of Buccleuch were at the Duke of Hamilton's home (Dungavel House) when Hess arrived on the night of the 10th May. On the morning of the 11th May the Duke of Kent and the Duke of Buccleuch were involved in a car crash while driving along the Douglas to Lanark road. The Duke of Kent's car hit a coal lorry. The scene of the accident was very close to Dungavel House." : The flight of Rudolf Hess - The Education Forum

  • I'm sorry, but wasn't it the Duke of Hamilton who was, allegedly of course, involved in the aforementioned plot?

  • His Grace The 9th Duke of Buccleuch, 11th Duke of Queensberry had died at Bowhill, his country estate. His son, The Earl of Dalkeith has taken over the title and estate, as well as the chairmanship of the Buccleuch Group.

  • found the music a bit overpowering. nice to see though.

I was raised ion the estate, served my appreticship as did my Dad and uncles, grandmother and Grandad all worked on the estate.
