Nine Long Days -- Quickdraw original

Sequel to my Sand Creek song. This story takes place in eastern Colorado in 1868, when 50 Army scouts were surrounded and attacked by a thousand Cheyenne and Sioux warriors, led by Roman Nose. But, the Indians were not expecting repeating Spencer rifles, and they paid a heavy price. The scouts dug in on a sand bar in the river for nine long days, which came to be known as Beecher's Island, named for Lt. Beecher who fell there. Under cover of night, they sent two messengers to try to get help, and nine days after the fight began, the U.S. Cavalry rescued the survivors.
