Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, along with Dallas City Council members and other City Officials, participated in Dallas Fire Ops 101, which was held at the Dallas Fire Department Training Facility on April 5, 2008.
Participants were suited up in firefighting protective clothing and participated in several scenarios, one of which included a live fire extinguishment. The importance of SCBAs and Thermal Imagers was easy to realize while crawling through the smoke!!
Participants also had the opportunity to see many of the resources that the department has available and were able to put their hands on it and have their questions answered.
The program was definately a success and you should be able to see that from this video!! Dallas' Elected Officials and City Leaders were able to gain valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of their Fire Department.
The success of Dallas Fire Ops 101 can be directly attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Department, The Dallas Fire Fighters Association Local 58, The Black Fire Fighters Association, and The Hispanic Fire Fighters Association working together toward a common goal.
A special thank you goes out to the DFFA Auxiliary, the Box 4 Fire Buffs Association, Captain Daniel DeYear and the Training Academy staff, and the Citizens Fire Academy Alumni Association for their contributions. Thank you to Jeff Francis (19C) for preparing the meal, and to all of the Dallas Firefighters who volunteered their time and came out to help make the day an absolute success!!
The beautiful weather was just an added bonus to a successful program that could not have been possible without the work of so many!!
Thank you to David Hill (19C) for taking on the role of Fire Ops Coordinator and working hard for many months prior to make it happen!!
It is amazing what can be accomplished when it matters not who gets the credit!!

The best comment award goes to Sheffie Kadane, Dallas City Co Dist 9. At 3:04 he said, "It was so cool. And it went out so quick....once we did the right thing."
And yes, this is a great idea. Every city should do it.

What a great concept. Every city should have a program like this one to show the city administrators what it is like to be a firefighter. Sort of like the citizens fire academy for city officials.

That was cool that they got city workers to go out and participate.
