One of my satellite speakers is in the mist of being assembled and test fitted. So this was a good time to provide an idea of what the inside of the speaker looks like.

  • 1:03 - 1:07 dampening material... is that the fabric that is in every speaker? if so i dont have a clue what it is for can you please tell me?

by the way that is a very nice speaker man.

  • Yes. The damping material, usually wool stuffing, fiberglass, or in my case poly-fill, is inserted into most loudspeaker cabinets to reduce standing waves inside the cabinet to tighten up bass performance while knocking out muddiness the midbass range and unwanted ringing in the midrange frequencies. Without the damping material a loudspeaker will have a cheap canny sound similar to the speakers of a portable boom box.

  • so what kind of speakers do you use then? I realize you make your own cab... I think that's awesome!

I'm just wondering what brand of components you use... that tweeter looks impressive!

  • The Speakers shown feature a Vifa 6 1/2" woofer and a Vifa 1" silk dome tweeter. I perchased the drivers from Meniscus Audio. If you are up to building your own cabinets I highly recommend Vifa. The drivers are fair in price yet have great performance.

  • very nice , very nice. they look good so far, is veneer like a tape with wood print or more like real thin wood?

  • Veneer takes on a few different forms. One is a cheap self adhesive vinyl with a wood like pattern printed on it. Middle of the road veneer is actual wood sliced to thin sheets with a self adhesive backer. High Quality veneer, which I'm using, is slightly thicker at 1/64 inches thick, sand-able, and applied with either contact cement or cold press veneer glue and pressure applied to the veneered usually via a vacuum bag. We're using both the vacuum bag /veneer glue and contact cement methods.

  • Can a lack of dampening in the lower half of a tower speaker cause a humming sound when it hits certain bass frequencies?

I've got some tall Sonys that do that and I read that the lower half with the subs is lacking any sort of poly-fill...

  • nice, ur making ur own speakers?
