Sumela Monastery, Turkey, October 2006

This fifth cenury monastery is built into a mountainside near Trabzon in North East Turkey. I visited it in October 2006.

As usual the beauty and quality of the architecture is reflected in the comments by a good old fashioned battle of annoying nationalist opinion.

Besides only Greeks had the true inginuity to build a magnificent monastery on a shear cliff face in the 5th Century..

dude, your empire invaded and enslaved the entire Greek populations of Greece and Asia Minor for well over 400 years... you've sacked our most holiest of cities, churches and cathedrals; illegally annexed Greek lands and have destroyed any Greek presence in the attempt to make the worl believe you were there first and what your empire did was just and fair!! That's not a matter of paying respect to other religions. That's, unfortunately, just the matter of our government's insoucience towards all kinds of ancient remainings. We all hate to see the Anatolian history in such neglect.

Another greek (byzantine) monument taken be turks and one of the few christian monasteries that wasn't turned in to a mosk or a farm, not paying respect to forein religions... the civilised turks
