I used the trains between Cape Town & Paarl, Strand, & Simonstown & Johannesburg & Pretoria in 1994 with no problems, I understand the latter route has at least in part the new standard gauge Gautrain, This could form the basis of a standard gauge high speed network possobly linking all the major centres.

You can see my house in the background in the last shot! The narrator has a cool accent. I miss Kalk Bay; I used that station all the time...I've been away from home for over a year and a half...thanks for bringing back good memories!
