Sixth of selected excerpts from 'Orfeo ed Euridice' staged at Glyndebourne, 1982. In which we find Orfeo expressing wonderment at the beauty and serenity of the Elysian Fields, yet finding that even all this cannot soothe him as can seeing and hearing his beloved alive once again.

(Only selected scenes will be uploaded from this fine production. Rest will follow soon....)

The great British mezzo-soprano, Dame Janet Baker, sings the role of Orfeo with heartbreaking sincerity in this Glyndebourne staging (by Peter Hall). These performances were the singer's farewell to the operatic stage. Not to be missed !

ORFEO
Che puro ciel! che chiaro sol!
Che nuova luce è questa mai!
Il dolce lusinghiera suoni
Dei bei tanto rialati
So don qui in questa val!
Dell'aure il sussurrar il mormorar de rivi
Al riposar eterna tutto invita qui!
Ma ta quiete che qui tanto regna,
Non mi dà la felicità
Sol tanto tu, Euridice;
Puoi far sparir dal tristo cuore mio la fanno!
I tuoi soavi accenti,
Gli amorosi tuoi sguardi, un tuo soriso,
Sono il sommo ben, che chieder voglio.

  • Have also been studying this piece tonight, listened to it in two different languages...was originally written for a man who'd had his bollocks cut off.

  • @CongenitalMutation Hmm...that's one way to describe the poor castrato, I suppose!
