HMS Thunder Child
Royal Navy first-class protected cruiser
Standard Displacement: 8786 tons
Length: 120.8 meters
6 cannons (18 cm)
3 underwater torpedoes (45 cm)
Speed: 22 knots

Planned as a prototype Arrogant class cruiser at request of the Turkish navy. General improvements included increased speed and optimized offensive force. Given Turkey's financial state at the time, they were unable to finance the construction, but with the assistance of the Royal Navy it was completed and incorporated into the Royal Navy's fleet, completing their offensive forces.
In November 1900, at the height of the Martian invasion, it ignored orders from headquarters to retreat and launched an attack on Martian forces. In a magnificent show of force it crushed three Martian tripods, which were useless in water. The ship was severed at the stern, but it did not sink. Afterwards, the Martians were vanquished by Earth's bacteria.

April 1911 - Drafted into the Australian navy
1915 - Moved to the reserve fleet
1921 - Dismantled due to aging

The steel panels struck by the Martians' heat rays can still be seen today in the outdoor displays of the British Museum.

I have no idea if this is awesome or not. As a dedicated fan of the original musical, this is a little stange. (Though "Ram Attack, Ram Attack!" is a compleatly hillerious, if accurate way to describe the Thunder Child's last ditch strike on the Tripods)
