I've been playing seriously for 55 years and at one point I was a +2 for

3 years. Most of your other videos were really good and I thought your

feet together drill was the best of all because Jimmy Thompson, at one

time the longest hitter on the PGA tour, said this exercise promoted a

perfect golf swing but I believe an attempt to keep the left arm straight

as a ramrod is going to cause tension which tends to slow the swing

down - I think being relaxed increases clubhead speed - works for me.

Hi Ed; no worries there and I agree with you; this is for the golfer who really has a collapse of that lead arm and needs to FEEL what not collapsed is and to him it will FEEL ramrod straight. The exercise that I promote in this video works amazingly well with the students that need it and by the sounds of it you don't because you still have nice width! :) Shawn

I can't believe that this is being taught to some people out there....ramrod straight?? You're going to get mighty familiar with the trees and out of bounds that way. Perhaps you can make friends with the woodland creatures while your there. Relaxed and extended. Tension hinders movement thus hindering speed and clubhead rotation. All of which are pretty important in finding the fairway/green or your new friends Chip and Dale in the woods.

Yeah, that analogy is highly flawed. The reason why you have a straight arm when pulling back a slingshot is that it would require a lot of muscular effort to resist the slingshot otherwise. This isn't a factor in the golf swing, however. Thirty percent of PGA pros bend their left arms. In fact, Clemshaw does himself! At the top of his BS, his left arm is slightly bent. Besides, what almost no one realizes is that the left arm should start to bend slightly approaching contact.

When you see over 80 people a week in your academy, which I was nominated for teacher of the year btw, you would realize that some need to feel what it is like to have some tone on the arm and that to maintain width, you need to get the upper body out of the way; this does both as a DRILL, so enough with the knee jerk reaction and open the mind and watch so more of my videos and actually learn something for once; Shawn

Hey Volleybud! If you only knew the rest of it! I love when someone can judge everything about someone by just meeting them; I guess you have not watched anything else I have am I right? The point of this video is to allow the body to turn so that you can have relaxed extension; like Tom and Bubba Watson; and getting ramrod straight is going to the other side of the pendulum so that you can fall back into a relaxed extension; which you will see in so many of my videos!

I've been hitting really well with it. My short game also improved a lot because my knee jerking was gone and i wasn't hitting fat shots anymore. My arms and hands stayed quiet because having the left arm straight made "hands before clubhead on the downswing" easier and possible. My distance and accuracy is back all because of this one swing thought. I have a golf game tomorrow and wanted to confirm my thoughts by checking youtube instructions. I came upon your video and it really helped!!!

As i was obsessed with finding my old swing, i hit the range around 9 days straight, trying to figure out what the hell he meant by keep the right foot grounded. It was only then i realized that when i kept my left arm straight on the downswing, it hindered my knee jerking and enabled me to start my downswing with my hips moving laterally. Moreover, as i was checking it with my V1 software, i saw that my elbows were not far apart, i maintained a bigger lag and the club was on plane

Hi Shawn. I was really furious with my swing for the past couple of months. Prior to that, i had a very long business trip that made me forget a lot about my old good swing. I had lessons around a few weeks ago and my coach consistently told me to keep my right foot grounded as much as possible to enable my hips to turn the right direction. I had this problem where my right foot tends to rise up even before i can finish half of my downswing. Sort of like a right knee jerking downswing.

hi, to be honest, keeping the left arm straight is not very exciting news. However, it would be very useful to learn drills, how to get there. I have been struggling with my left arm collapsing at the end of my backswing for ten years and simply cannot get rid of it. Thanks for any advice.

I think keeping my left arm locked at the start of my swing has really helped my swing become alot more consistently good

Thanks for all the tips. I built my swing based on your youtube videos. This was a great analogy. Watching your videos benefits me more than lessons. No joke. I started at 25, I'm 26 now. But I'm pretty sure I'll be on some tour within a couple years tops.

Actually i've seen quite a few of your videos and found some of them quite insightful. Particularly liked the one on the takeaway and the idea of already being in motion and catching the "next swing by" for the takeaway.

I just can say in my opinion as an amateur golfer that "ramrod" straight projects too much tension in the hands and shoulders and thats one thing i don't want when i'm at the top of my swing about to transition into the down swing.
