I am not japanese but my understanding is the reason why the women stand behind the men is to show honor to the house and to the man. also back in the days of war and stuff like that the womna would stand behind the man for protection.

I will try to answer your question, but your phrasing it was offensive
"Treat them like pets" This is the danger of judging another culture based upon ur values. Having gone on dates with Japn girls myself, some of them PREFER to walk about a metre behind me. That is cultural and has NOTHING to do with treating women poorly.
"aren't treated equally" is very general-keep in mind that Western countries STILL have issues about equal pay, etc. Don't lump people together, as everyone is different

I think you need to be more clear. Are you referring to Japanese men finding Japanese women? women in general? or what?
How can anyone answer this question intelligently? They can only speak for themselves, any troubles they've had, and expectations they hold. We can imagine that there are strict, traditional men and loose, liberal men in ANY society.
