Lonesome Dove is remembered a lot better than N&S.  It has quality actors and not a bunch of soap opera actors.

Agreed with many here. North and South, and Lonesome Dove were only about 3 years apart, but they are both great American classics in their own right. I have Lonesome Dove which I think is the best Western ever written and produced, and I will be getting North and South soon. Wy wife is the decendant from South Carolina planters and wealthy land owners dating back to 1708. She is also a hopeless romantic. As a horseman myself, I can tell that Patrick Swayze really knows how to ride.

First off this mini -series was done before any of these actresses starred on any type of soap..Genie Francis is the only one who was on a soap at the time. There are some big names on this show.

@sharon07430 - Some of the best actors are from the soaps. When Genie Francis was on General Hospital in the mid-70s to early 80s the scenes were taped live, which meant that there were not retakes. You couldn't mess up.  Back then, the soaps were much like a stage production. BTW, Elizabeth Taylor requested to be on General Hospital b/c she was such a big fan of Luke and Laura. Genie Francis when from there to make a movie entitled, "Bare Essence." where she made 1 mistake w/ her lines.

@steverouse56 Just to name a few: Olivia Cole, Jean Simmons, Robert Mitchum, David Carradine, Elizabeth Taylor, Hal Hollbrock, Gene Kelly. These aren't quality actors? I've never seen Lonesome Dove and probably never will. North & South has people still talking about it. I don't watch soaps, maybe you do. I never knew who Luke and Laura was until some girls pointed out that "Brett" was "Laura".....

Robert Mitchum, Elizabeth Taylor, James Steward, Johnny Cash, David Carradine etc..are Hollywood icons of the 50s and 60s and whatnot!!! They are no soap actors.

Also, what's wrong with soap actors? They are actors who act in the soap opera genre. So what? A lot of soap actors are brilliant. Just b/c you dislike soaps doesn't mean these people can't act.

this story stayed true too the actual events of the war,while still interacting all the actors and plots they went through.

But neither did Genie Francis. Terri Garber was an unknown at the time. The tried to show all the "name" actors. Robert Guillame isn't in it until later on either.
