The 3rd and deciding game of the championship round in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, USA vs Canada at the Molson Center (now the Bell Center) in Montreal, Quebec. Mike Richter started in goal for the US, Curtis Joseph for Canada. Despite being a "home" game for the US, this game was played in Montreal. Announced by Doc Emrick and John Davidson.

The World Cup of Hockey replaced the Canada Cup and is organized by the NHL. Unlike the IIHF World Championships, the games take place after the NHL playoffs are over. It is not affiliated with the Olympics.

  • one of the best games ive ever seen

  • This is great, real international hockey. None of that "all-start game" type crap we get at the Olympics. I love the physical play.

  • Gretzky choked

  • This may have been the high water mark for US hockey. Up to here there was constant improvement. Since, we've gone backwards. There is not a single US player in the NHL now of the calibre of Modano, Lafontaine, Leetch, Roenick, Tkachuk, Leclair. The US development program hasn't produced a top level offensive player in 20 years. I get frustrated thinking how our progress in hockey has stalled & how top US prospects like Patrick Kane seem to reach a certain level, but never become elite players.

  • Man LeClair was a force.

  • We need another Olympic or World Cup Victory over Canada badly. Let's face it - since 1996, Canada has dominated with the exception of 1 US Jr championship and 1 Women's Gold in 98.

  • This was a nail biter to watch and still is even if I already know the outcome. Tony Amonte was amazing. His line with John LeClair and Smolinski drove Canada nuts. I remember it being a nasty, very chippy game with raw emotion and some pretty dirty hits by Canada. Remember it like it was yesterday. 1235shank is clearly Canadian and shows lack of perspective. So Canada's excuse was that the game was fixed. That's an excuse I have never heard before. Sour grapes?

  • I remember watching this live and, my god, the greatest hockey I've ever seen. USA were underdogs, but look at that lineup! Every bit as good as Canada I think; not at the end of the bench, but at top they were maybe even a little better. Hull, Modano, Tkachuk, John LeClaire, Amonte, LaFontaine, a young dougie Weight, Leetch, and oh yeah Richter in goal. And they were all such fantastic skaters the Canada D were rightfully terrified.

  • @collectivegooblossom every one of these guys was an all star...

  • Tony Amonte, you were incredible.

  • Ron Wilson looks less angry with brown hair.
