Single Distance Championships 2001 in Salt Lake City . The first ISU race at the UOO. Oystein Grodum paired with Stian Bjorge. I remember watching this race and thinking that Grodum was the best skater I had seen. At this meet Grodum does a 10 second personal best. As of today (2010) he has improved by almost 1 minute to his 2000 personal best 10k time.
For the Experienced observer, there have been many tactical and technique changes. Two simple ones: Tactically, skaters take at least one more crossover step out of the corner (sometimes more than just one). Technically, Grodum improved his corner posture with his now famous Grodum arm swing. In this video you can see his left should dipping, a lot of people laugh, but once he kept his hips square (thus his left shoulder would not dip) he became one of the best long distance skaters.
