There are strong arguments that satire and rhetoric paved the way for ancient athenian democracy; we can't neglect the correlation between sophisms and democracy.

the job of a politician, sadly, is not to be honest, but to do what works for our country. I'd rather have a scoundrel in the senate whose policies are good for the American people, than an angel with bad policy choices. I care more about the reality of what is achieved, rather than liking the person. Policians have to be good rhetoriticians and great sophists to win elections - i'm not saying that's what I want, but it is how the fairest - working - political system I can think of functions.

you criticized attack ads and asked for what the politician will do, but then said you can't believe someone running on an issue would follow through on it...so for you there are no issues - positive or negative.
I disagree, the issues are more important than the character of the person. Some democrats i dislike, but who i vote for because their sides of particular issues work better for the country; party label holds them to at least some distinguishing policy characteristics.

And I agree, and all positive campaign is a nice change of pace. But in truth; you have to see the GOOD of the negative. One is mostly exposing the truth; to warn the voters of the mistakes a presidential canidate has made. For instance, there was a bit of a scandal with John Kerry over his war-stories and being a "hero". It likely lost voters (Mostly veterans). It's mostly a better way to say, "Hey, he's a liar, I'm not, you don't want a lying president, do you?"
Well, they pay. Depending on your cable-company (I think) or perhaps it's the station like NCB/ABC/CBS. But, they want money. They don't have morals, they probably would do a full day of commericals if given the right paycheck.

I totally agree. It's sad how close politics and money are to each other.

Ok Curman, So you make a few good points. I expect political ads and they are pretty much a necesity but the point that I was trying to make is why do there have to be so many and why do they have to just about take over all of the commercials?

As for all of the attack ads, I'm not saying that they don't help a candidate. I'm just saying that it would be nice for a change to see a candidate using an all positive campaign. That is something that I would like to see and would be a lot more willing to vote for a candidate that uses positivity compared with someone who uses negativity to run their campaign!
