09/Mar/2009 UTC Chinese President Hu Jintao has called on Tibetan delegates to the National People's Congress to work to prevent Tibet from becoming independent. Speaking at a meeting of delegates from the Tibet Autonomous Region in Beijing on Monday, Hu said that they must combat separatism and safeguard national unity to promote long-term stability in the region. Hu also urged delegates to pursue a higher standard of living for Tibetans through stability combined with rapid economic development. The Chinese government has stepped up security in Tibetan regions ahead of Tuesday, the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising, to prevent a recurrence of last year's riots. The 1959 uprising led to the exile of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, to India. Observers say Hu was expressing unity with Tibetan delegates in an effort to curb support for the Dalai Lama within China. 2009/03/10 06:03(JST) (JST: UTC+9hrs.)
