A lot of good German patriotic songs got tainted because they were appropriated by the Nazis.

The Nazis basically put their stamp on all things that were German and Good and nothing to do with racist, genodical ideology.

Imagine a far right racist regime coming to power in the US and making Stars and Stripes forever their favorite marching song.

Then after the regime has bitten dust Americans will notice that they cannot sing Stars and Stripes for ever without creating controversy.

Ver true and yet sadly enough this type of music, the prussian style, goostep, tambor majours is still quite taboo in Germany so much so of risking prosecuting by the state... Funny thing that communist germany did not have any of such complexes...

My grandfather fought in the Wehrmacht, he mentioned singing this song with his comerads in his letters :)

@vsimha - I fully agree with you. A simple example is the "Entnazifizierung" of the german language, still making it difficult or at least uneasy to call a driving licence "Führerschein" . I still need a Führerschein to drive a car though :-)
