Jack Kirby, American comic book creator tribute: "A True Hero of Hollywood"

We pay tribute to legendary comic creator Jack Kirby on his birthday Aug. 28, 2012 which we declare as National Jack Kirby Day.

Jack "King" Kirby was co-creator of the iconic characters Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, the Silver Surfer and the Avengers, to name but a few.

Most fans are shocked to learn that the Kirby family has not received any compensation from the derivative blockbuster films based on Kirby's creations. Hollywood, however, would have none of their superhero hits without the original creative vision of Jack Kirby.

In 2012, his granddaughter Jillian Kirby spearheaded the campaign Kirby4Heroes to spread the mission of Hero Initiative, a nonprofit organization that helps comic book creators in financial and medical need.

Kirby's incredible, prolific work with Stan Lee was a great inspiration for the conception of our comic geek girl web series "Generic Girl," created by Victor R. Solis & Steven Itano Wasserman. Inspired by silver age comics & their TV adaptations in the 1960s and 70s.

Captain America Romance comics Fantastic Four Hulk Thor Avengers X-Men Darkseid Doctor Doom Silver Surfer Galactus S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury Kirby co-created and plotted all their stories. They were edited, tweaked, and dialogued by Stan Lee. Stan deserves half the credit - he reined Kirby's excesses, made the words sing, and was an excellent publicist. But NEVER forget who's STORIES they really were - Jack Kirbys'.
