SAS website have some problems for the past few days , I'll wait if things will get back to normal , here you have at least direct mod download link from Filefront and Mediafire host .
Make sure to disable any other gun smoke weapon mod .
Inside this folder are 4 different mods to choose from , pick the one you will like the most and try it .

IL2 1946 Ricochet , Gunsmoke , 0 50 Caliber Bullets 2D or 3D or no bullets smoketrail mod release .

@bigloloraf this is working 100% with IL-2 1946 modded version 4.09m , I don't know if this is still working with latest 4.10 or 4.101 game versions installs , there is already an answer regarding things you'll need in some of the previous comments responses .

@torque2802 it's been a while but I'm pretty certain placing it in the MODS folder automatically activates it

@torque2802 put the folder for the mod in the MODS folder, the exact directory line (including the version of the mod I used) is this:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\i­l 2 sturmovik 1946\MODS\00_HG&P_Ricochet_Gun­Smoke_Bullets_3D_Smoketrail

@torque2802 after you patch it, it works like any other game with mods. if you install the Ultra Pack, it comes with its own mod manager called JGSME which lets you activate and deactivate mods easily if they're formatted to work with JGSME (which this mod is not, but you can just toss the version of this mod you would like to use in the MODS folder and it will work alongside any other mods you install, with or without JGSME)

JGSME is located in the main IL 2 directory after installing the UP

@torque2802 the Steam version of IL2 1946 is entirely compatible with mods. however, you need to patch it. you can find the patch on the Ultra Pack website, just google it, and look at the "how to install" article.

the MODS folder goes into the main IL2 directory (Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\i­l 2 sturmovik 1946\MODS)

@torque2802 I always hate Steam'ed things. the problem maybe is from the steam setup. I recommend you to download via torrent. the original CD game that doesnt include steam. also its really easy to use mods. I was a noob too, But its very simple just download the Modact and it will let you to use mods. (Modactivator).

@Metalicalypse bought the game off steam, and it works fine was able to patch to 4.10.1 but anything else it says a file for a russian paratrooper is missing, and all the guides go on about a mods folder in the il2 program files and i dont have that folder, dont know where to create it, and the youtube guides arent very helpful either so its the standard game for me. rfactor is a easy to understand modable game, il2 eh not so much

@torque2802 Hmm thats strange,my game is well doing, did you buy the game? if yes then you could download the one from the torrent. I bought the firls il2 sturmovik and all the expansions then I bought the full 1946 but after some installing my CD died, I re downloaded from the torrents. and its the same as the original. Try that it should work %100.
