Almost a year ago, I lost my job. Am now in the process of losing my house. I've been thinking about going "off the grid" and living in something mobile. My problem is that I have three cats that I will not abandon. I'm afraid a van just wouldn't work for us. Also, I am 57 with bad arthritis. I'm thinking some sort of RV would be my best bet. I like the idea of the metal detector for finding money. I've been wondering how I could get the money for gas and food.

I just had to let you know that I been living "off the Grid" since 2006, and I am loving every minute of it. I use the bathrooms at the gas stations that have one toilet and a sink in one room, so I can wash up. I go to truckstops if I need a shower for about $10.00 and other than that I keep a spray bottle of vinegar to wash up when I do not have a personal bathroom handy. I too have a portapotty.I love living this way, I have more freedom than any of my friends and family.

I love this video. I would get a twin mem. foam mattress to complete the van but other than that simple is best. I've told people I wanted to do this before and they look at me like I'm nuts, but I think working 40+ hours a week to pay for the governments inability to manage money is crazy.

Check Sun Electtronics to see if they have more of their Sun 10watt panels available and on sale for $18.90 each. That's cheap. I just got 10 and they appear to be of good quality. By my calculation 30 watts will run a laptop most of the day, and 60 watts will run a laptop almost continuously with a 100 ah lead acid 12vdc deep cycle ( not a marine battery) 20 watts would run a light bulb 11w, continuously in good weather. 100 watts would provide enough power for most needs , most of the year.

When travelling, a number of times, I have stoped in some small towns at the local convienence story. I've asked the clerk inside, if it would be okay if I parked off to the side of the parking lot, and got a few hours sleep. I'd say I was tired, and would be leaving in the morning. I have never been refused permission, and I have never been bothered by Police. By the way, travelling in Alaska with temps down close to zero, I used two sleeping bags inside one another, a ski cap, and was warm.

You might want to consider installing a small solar panel and a luggage rack on top of the van. The solar panel would be low profile and would probably not be noticed by people at ground level. It would also be disguised by the luggage rack. People might see something, but would probably just assume that it was part of the luggage rack. The rack would give you the ability, in an emergency situation, to carry additional supplies or bulky items. Your toilet is perfect! I am subscribing.
