Quoted from Ronald Smith's "Alkan, The Man, The Music": "Characteristically Alkan ends his greatest collection of miniatures with an unnumbered Laus Deo (Praise to God) - a sober chorale, framed in mystery, announced and dismissed by an arresting peal of bells. What could be simpler, stranger... or more unique?"

  • The only thing you can expect from Alkan is innovation.

  • Why haven't I ever heard of him?!

  • @staystilljason And brilliance.

  • Annoyingly I cannot find the download to this sheet music anywhere.

  • @kabivose I've recently finally found (and ordered) a book with Alkan's esquisses. I'll try both methods as well, and see whether I notice any differences as well :)

  • @fhood Yes! I've played it both ways and the way he says to do it does something very different to my brain. Very strange effect. I doubt the audience would notice it but I feel it's well worth doing as he says.

  • @OceansBoulevard

I had the exact same experience! :)

  • When performing this piece, do you fellow pianists play ms. 3-10 with crossed hands as the score would indicate (i.e. the left hand playing the half-note chords that are higher on the keyboard while the right hand takes the descending quarter note passage)? Just wondering....

  • @HuggumsMcgehee

Because he is one of those less known composer who don't get any of the acknowledgement they actually deserve...

  • first 3 bars remeber to me the theme of the finale of the jupiter symphony by Mozart

  • That's what I generally meant, but perhaps that didn't come through very clearly in my post. Good to see we can agree on this.

  • @mickyj300x Actually I believe, (not sure) that is is a postlude now after looking it up.
