It seems like the reason there are so many negative comments is that a lot of people I guess are "forced" to watch this and - god forbid - engage their brains for something more taxing than watching X-factor while txtin wiv their m8s lol.

reading this book was a fundamental part of my education in school. I never got to see the actual program before. thank you. John Berger is great. I learned so much from him.

I don't think that Benjamin was unaware of those opportunities, as you say. In fact, his work suggests that he understood the contradictions. Benjamin was questioning normalized assumptions about the reproduction of images. But this questioning didn't have absolute values attached. Perhaps there were other members of the Frankfurt who are more of a depressing read, but Benjamin works brims with potential.

oh wow, im reading the book at the moment and not only just found out about the series! this is great. such an amazing book, my mother did a thesis based on the essays & i am now 16 and trying MY HARDEST to fully take in what the book has to offer. so far so good, half way done. weow

Thanks for posting, I remember watching it at the time so I followed his work over the years, an impressive thinker. As regards whether it was shown in the US or not, I dunno, but with his haircut and choice of shirts, I can see why the authorities would fret. They wouldn't have understood anything he said either.
